CH 9 The luteal phase - Coggle Diagram

- - - - Lysis of CL must occur before female can enter the follicular phase
        
        Requirements for luteolysis: presence of oxytocin receptors on endometrial cells, presence of a critical level of oxytocin, PGF2 alpha synthesis by the endometrium
  - - - Exogenous PGF2 alpha is a potent luteolysin and can synchronize estrus
- - - - about day 3-5 the CL increases in size and mass until mid cycle
        
        near end of luteal phase CL decreases in size and loses function
        
        Regressed CL becomes Corpus albicans
        
        Functional capability of CL depends on its ability to secrete progesterone
        
        insufficient luteal function = poor progesterone synthesis and secretion
        
        reproductive failure
        
        Progesterone target organs - hypothalamus, uterus, and mammary gland
        
        uterus has 2 target components
        
        glandular endometrium
        
        muscular myometrium
        
        p4 stimulates maximal secretion by endometrial glands which contribute to the environment tthat supports the development of the "free floating" conceptus
        
        an inhibitory role of P4 is to reduce the motility (contractions) of the myometrium
        
        provides calming conditions for attachment of the conceptus to the uterine endometruum
        
        causes final alveolar development of the mammary gland, allowing initiation of lactation
        
        Increase in size is due to hypertrophy (increase in size) of large luteal cells and hyperplasia (increase in cell #) of small luteal cells
