3.2 Redox titrations
Key Half Equations
purple to palest pink
orange to green
no colour change
pale green to pale yellow
brown to colourless unless starch indicator is used then blue-black to colourless
Redox titration to determine copper content of a copper(II) salt
If iodine ions are added to solution of CU2+ ions, a white solid of CuI and a brown solution of iodine are formed
This shows that two moles of Cu2+ ions form one mile of aqueous I2 molecules
Sodium thiosulfate solution is used so that you can determine how much iodine has formed
Thiosulfate ions reduce iodine molecules to iodine ions becoming oxidised to S4O62- ions in the process
Adding starch allows the end point to be observed more accurately
Overall equation for the reaction =
