Information and Communication Technology (ICT)
Data Centers
A typical data center costs arounf 1 billion dollars and occupy several hundered thousands sqm
Wireless communications and digital media
Digitalisation
is how business can be transformed by digital technologies (e.g. through new business models).
digitalisation is far more than just apps. It can include innovative use of AI, robotics, sensor networks, Blockchain, and virtual reality
The World Economic Forum’s (WEF) Digital Transformation Initiative (DTI) has identified seven key technologies:
artificial intelligence
autonomous vehicles
big data analytics and cloud
custom manufacturing and 3D printing
IoT
robots and drones
social media and platforms.
WEF DTI report estimates that digitalisation could unlock $100 trillion of value over the next decade.
Digitisation
refers to the more technical aspects of how information and media are converted to digital form for storage, manipulation and transmission.
5G and the Internet of Things
IoTs
The complexity of IoT leads to a shift towards an architecture which has 3 tiers:
Devices: the sensors, actuators/motors, input/output and other devices.
The Edge: gateways that collate data and provide pre-processing and connectivity.
The Cloud: centralised processing and data storage, giving the immense benefits of AI and big data.
Virtual and augmented reality
