8.2 Direct Supervisor’s Role
The supervisor must refer the employee to appropriate developmental activities that will help the employee achieve his or her objectives.
The supervisor helps assure the objectives are specific and achievable.
The supervisor needs to explain what steps the employee must take to achieve these objectives
The supervisor must check on the employee’s progress toward achieving the developmental objectives.
The supervisor should work with the employee to set developmental objectives.
The supervisor must provide reinforcement so the employee will be motivated to achieve the developmental objectives.

8.1.3 Developmental Activities
On the Job Developmental Activities
Mentoring – It is best to let the mentor and protégé choose each other. Mentor teaches employee what it takes to succeed in the organization.
Job rotation – Employee is temporarily assigned to different jobs to learn necessary skills.
On-the-job training
Developmental Activities In Addition to “On the Job”
Getting a degree – Employees often must commit to continuing to work for their employer for a prescribed amount of time or reimburse the organization for their tuition.
Attending a conference
Self-guided reading –Employees can read books or study other resources on their own.
Membership in a professional organization. Such organizations distribute publications to their members and hold meetings which allow members to learn best practices, etc.
Courses - In-house courses or tuition reimbursement.
8.3 360-Degree Feedback Systems
Information is gathered from individuals all around the employee from:
Supervisor
Peers
Customers
Subordinates
8.3.1 Advantages of 360-Degree Feedback Systems
Improved self-perceptions of performance
Improved performance
Increased commitment to improve
Reduced “undiscussables.”
Increased awareness of expectations
Employees enabled to take control of their careers
Decreased possibility of biases
8.3.2 Risks of Implementing 360-Degree Feedback Systems
When very few raters are providing the information
Raters may become overloaded with forms to fill out
The system is likely to lead to positive results
Implementing a 360-degree feedback system should not be a one-time-only event
Negative feedback can hurt an employee’s feelings
8.3.3 Characteristics of a Good System
Consider the following advice: subject to vulner- abilities, requiring sensitivity to hidden conflicts as much as to tangible results
