Male
No surge center for the big dump of GnRH
Negative feedback in brain due to testosterone because it gets converted to estrogen in the brain
Overtime, the hypothalamus will become less and less sensitive estrogen in the brain
Much higher amounts of testosterone and estrogen will be required to inhibit the release of GnRH
More GnRH will be released
More LH & FSH will be released
Stimulates testes fro spermatogenesis and therefore puberty has begun!
Must be able to produce sperm in sufficient quantities
Must be able to properly ejaculate
Must exhibit reproductive traits
Female
Must reach a size in which she can effectively carry a pregnancy
Must be in the proper energy balance
Certain nutrients are required to properly produce GnRH & LH & FSH
She must be able to pick up on environmental cues necessary for puberty
Season of birth
Photoperiod
Presence of male
Groups exposed to males may tend to have accelerated puberty
Size of herd
Small groups may tend to have delayed puberty
Hypothalamic sensitivity to the negative feedback loop decreases and triggers puberty
Smaller amounts of estradiol are needed to trigger the release of GnRH
Overtime, this increase will trigger the surge center to become active
Surge of GnRH
Ovulation & therefore puberty!!

Fetal liver produce alpha fetoprotein
Alpha fetoprotein binds to estrogen

Tonic center allows for a slow drip of GnRH
Surge center allows for the large dump of GnRH needed to induce ovulation in the female
Male
Testosterone is produced by the testes
Testosterone enters the brain
The hypothalamic surge center regresses
No large dump of GnRH
GnRH will only have a "slow drip" in the male
Testosterone is converted to estrogen by aromatase in the brain
