Human Performance Levels
Performance Level
Skill-Based
Performance that relies on stored routines or motor programs that have been learnt with practice and which may be executed without conscious thought (automatic).

Performance-Based
Performance for which a routine or procedure has been learned. The components of rule-based performance may comprise a set of individual skills. An example is responding to a fire warning. The individual skills in this example are actions such as closing a throttle and firing an extinguisher. These actions are executed with or without conscious thought.

Knowledge-Based
Performance for which no procedure has been established. These require a skilled operator to evaluate information, and use his knowledge and experience to formulate a plan for dealing with the situation. These actions are executed with conscious thought.
