EVALUATION
Good External Validity
!STRENGTH!
- most observations (though not stranger anxiety) were made by parents during ordinary activities & reported to the researchers
- alternative would have been to have researchers present to record observations
- this may have distracted the babies/made them feel nervous
- means it's highly likely that participants behaved naturally while being observed
!LIMITATION!
- HOWEVER
- issues with asking mothers to be 'observers'
- unlikely to be objective observers
- may have been biased in terms of what they noticed & what they reported
- e.g. may not have noticed when their baby was showing signs of anxiety/misremembered it
- means even if babies behaved naturally, their behaviour may not have been accurately recorded
-
Real-world Application
!STRENGTH!
- practical application in day-care
- asocial & indiscriminate stages in day-care is likely to be straight forward as babies can be comforted by any skilled adult
- HOWEVER - Schaffer & Emerson's research tells us that day-care (especially starting day-care with an unfamiliar adult) may be problematic during specific attachment stage
- means parents use of day-care can be planned using Schaffer & Emerson's stages
Generalisability
!STRENGTH/LIMITATION!
- Shaffer & Emerson based their stage account on a large-scale study with some good design features
- only looked at 1 sample which had unique features in terms of current & historical context - 1960s working class Glasgow
-
