Various Governments
Parliamentary systems: The chief executive (prime minister) is not voted by the people, it is voted by the powerful people. Vote for reps, the party with most reps, pick the party in charge (Great Britain)

Oligarchy: Rule by a small group of elites, the rich and powerful (can be a religious group).

Democracy: The people vote for a person. People's Government
Democratic republic (US): pick the people who vote (ex: U.S President)

Constitution
Federalism: national government → state government → local government. each limited to what it can do
Separation of Powers: Each branch of government has its own responsibilities and limitations (Articles 1, 2, and 3)
Republicanism: not a direct democracy, elect people to represent us
Checks and Balances: Each of the three branches of government exercises some control over the others, sharing power among them. (Articles 1, 2, and 3) Make sure one branch wasn’t too powerful

Limited Government: Powers of government are restricted by the constitution. (Articles 1, 2, and 3)

Government and Civics
Civics: the role of the individual in government. Your rights and responsibilities as a citizen. (jury duty, paying taxes, obeying laws, etc.)

Government: The structure and processes a group of people observe in determining who has power, what choices to make, and what rules to follow and enforce.
Federalism
State: Second most powerful. Powers reserved: education, marriage laws
Local: Third most powerful: water, sewage, police and fire, libraries
Federal: most powerful government, the national government (Washington D.C.)
Powers

Reserved powers: What the state, local governments and people can do. In the constitution these powers are left for these groups.
Enumerated or Delegated powers: In the constitution what the government can do (ex: post office, maintain army)
Political Parties

Democrat: Environmentalists, pro choice, pro gun control,
Republican: cut taxes, cut spending, military heavy, 2nd amendment
Ideology

Conservative: Maintain the status quo - the way things are. (if it goes to the extreme it goes “back in time” (right, republican)
Liberal: want change (if goes to the extreme can become revolutionary) (left, democrat)
