Formative assessment is a planned, ongoing process used by all students and teachers during learning and teaching to elicit and use evidence of student learning to improve student understanding of intended disciplinary learning outcomes and support students to become self-directed learners. Summative assessments are any method of evaluation performed at the end of a unit or term, allowing teachers to measure a students' understanding against standardised criteria.

Assessment for, as, and of learning (Jack Crean)
Assessment for learning involves using data on student learning and student performance to help tailor the approach of lessons to better meet the needs of students. It is used to support parents, students, and teachers in directing the learning journey. It can be both summative and formative.
Examples of assessment for learning include
- effective questioning
- Use of data and evidence
- Giving feedback
- Incorporating peer and self-assessment into learning.

Assessment of learning decides
what exactly students have learned in
the classroom. It justifies a students
competency in a subject and demonstrates
that they are capable in this subject. It promotes
the ranking of students and justifies levels for classes. This method of assessment is generally formative.
Examples of assessment for learning include
- End of course assessments.
- High stakes testing.
- Standardised examinatations
Assessment as learning
Assessment as learning involves students reflecting on assessments and using the information gained to make comptetent future decisions regarding their learning progress. Students reflect on what they do well and on what they need to improve on using assessment results and data.
Examples of assessment as learning:
- A reflective learning journal.
- A time management scheduling study planner.
- Creating a learning goals template after an assessment has taken place.
