The cardiac cycle
There are two phases, Diastole - the relaxation phase which takes about 0.5 seconds and Systole - the contraction phase which takes about 0.3 seconds
during exercise the diastole increases in time due to the increase in volume of blood needed to be pumped out of the body (venous return)
-
Starlings Law - the increase stoke volume as a result of an increased amount of blood filling the heart
Cardiac output (Q) the volume of blood pumped by the heart per minute
Heart rate (HR) the number of heart beats per minute
Stroke volume (SV) the volume of blood pumped out of the heart per beat
