Secondary Research Questions
What design decisions would be suitable for lightweight durability?
How do existing watches gain a reputation for being durable?
Apple Watch Ultra
The Apple Watch ultra makes use of a titanium encolsure along with a sapphire crystal glass protecting the screen. As a result, the watch is able to cope up with extreme pressures and heavy collisions
Garmin Venu2
The Garmin Venu2 makes use of a stainless steel body in addition to gorilla glass for the screen. As such, it sacrifices durability for a far lower cost.
In order to bring lightweight durability, the most obvious material which comes to mind is carbon fibre. This material is commonplace in automobiles for its strength yet lack of mass. However, shaping carbon fibre to meet the requirement of a precision smartwatch can be a challenge. Another material which could meet these requirements is PLA. Not only is it biodegradable, but it enables precision 3d printing at the cost of quality and finish though.
What makes a watch desirable?
What techniques to smartwatches use to gain value?
Breitling Exospace
Despite being a smartwatch, the breathing exospace wonderfully hides it due to extreme attention being placed of the materials, the self winding clock movement and a consistent theme.
Apple Watch Hermes
Despite being based off the Apple Watch Series 8, the Apple Watch Hermes is able to charge more than double for the watch. A key reason for this is the exclusivity and uniqueness of the design, with several listing watch faces, the Hermes name, and vastly different watch bands.
Tissot T-Touch Connect Solar
The Tissot T-Touch Connect Solar benefits from the captivating feature of sustainability, having no requirement to charge akin to a traditional Tissot watch. In addition, the bezels of the display are gracefully hidden by the instrument panel, one again boasting its self winding clock movement.
Brand name has a significant influence in making a watch desirable. In addition, a unique identity is critical to any success in bringing desirability.
What makes a watch affordable?
What do existing watches do to cut costs?
Mi Band 7
What the Mi Band 7 lacks in raw features is made up by an excellent and refined UI, making complete use of the edge-to-edge design and seamless integration with android.
FireBoltt Mercury
The FireBoltt mercury might struggle with its unintuitive UI or lack of customisation, but is largely succesfful due to an excelent outer design, feeling premium despite being affordable.
Noise ColorFit 4 Pro Max
The Noise ColorFit 4 Pro Max takes an uncompromising focus of features. As such, it appears to outperform watches over 10x its cost! On the contrary, issues with software and a lack of integration make other options more compelling.
An affordable watch has several requirements contradicting the previous ones. Successful affordable smartwatches have a focus on raw specs, excellent marketing, or a favourable UI.
How do we develop a timeless design?
A timeless timepiece depends on its ability to maintain abstractness and avoiding unnecessary technology which will become obsolete. The focus should not lie on the quantity of features, rather the finish and execution of them.
What are some of the most beautiful smartwatches and why?
Casio GSW-H1000-1
The Casio GSW-H1000-1 looks to emulate the traditional digital face of G-shocks, while bringing the functionality of WearOS. Key attention has been placed on retaining the design philosophy, despite lacking features.
Pixel Watch
Despite lacking on screen size, the presentation of the UI and the curved display has meant that, although it inferior technology, the Pixel Watch is as aesthetically pleasing as the Apple Watch Series 8 and Galaxy Watch5
Galaxy Watch5
The circular, edge-to-edge design of the Galaxy Watch5 means that even when the display is powered off, it presents a useful visual element to the wrist.
