-Scudder was pursued by German spies because he knew of a plan to assassinate Prime Minister Karolides who was coming to London on June 15.While escaping from the spies who were chasing him, he stopped at a flat owned by Hannay. Hannay had told what happened and Scudder allowed him to hide in his house. While in the house, Hannay had asked Scudder to continue the fight if something happened to him. The next day, Hannay found Scudder dead and decided to continue Scudder's work. However, he had to escape from Scudder's enemies and German spies caught him. Hannay had disguised himself as a milkman and boarded a train to Galloway with Scudder's booklet. On the way to Galloway, he read Scudder's notes and found that he uses a special code. The next day, news that Scudder is dead has spread and Hannay gets off the train for his own safety. Hannay ran to the river and up the hill because there were many German planes in the air. Finally, after a long journey, he reached an inn owned by a writer. Hannay had told the innkeeper but he couldn't do anything before June 15. German spies found him at the inn and caused Hannay to steal a car and escape in it. While traveling, Hannay had learned to read Scudder's code and learned that the Germans planned to kill Karolides so they would have an excuse to start a war. There were words "thirty nine steps" in Scudder's book but it was unknown what they meant. Hannay realized that he was being chased by German spies and got out of the car and let it fall into the river. Hannay was lucky because he was helped by a young man named Harry, who was the nephew of the Foreign Office Secretary, so Hannay told his story. Sir Harry helped Hannay to send a letter to his brother to schedule a meeting with him before June 15. Again Hannay had been chased by a German ship so he hid. While hiding Hannay had met a road guide, and took the opportunity to change clothes with him and take over the job. Three German spies following him questioned Hannay but they did not realize who he was Then Hannay ran into Jopley is an old man. Hannay, who was still in disguise, learned that some policemen were looking for him and he decided to flee to the countryside. The old man he found told him to hide in the house. However, Hannay realized that the old man was Scudder's enemy. The old man knew who Hannay really was and had locked Hannay in a room. Can Hannay get out of that room and continue his fight? Will the German spies find Hannay in that room?
