Cognitive Approach
Expectation
Schemas from other people can often lead us to act as we think they see us to act (self fulfilling prophecy) - primary research onto this
-
-
-
-
Grumpy, slow moving, lazy
Burnout
Continued stressors can lead to us feeling overwhelmed by workloads, causing us to need breaks, and resulting in procrastination
“physical, emotional, or mental exhaustion accompanied by decreased motivation, lowered performance, and negative attitudes toward oneself and others”
-
-
Self worth
-
Can be caused by criticism, adverse childhood experiences, Societal pressures and expectations, attacks on identity
Very common that the causes occur in adolescents so the link between procrastination and self worth become evident quickly
Fear of doing wrong means we end up not wanting to do the task at all (negative reinforcement) and subsequently procrastinating
Neg evaluation
Other age ranges have issues with self esteem and burnout. These are seemingly just procrastination as a whole, so why is it so prevalent in teens
-
Less scientific than the biological approach, far less falsifiable. Hard to measure
Cause and effect? do we experience low self worth because we are procrastinating or do we procrastinate because of our low self worth. No way to possibly tell.
Pos evaluation
Could help us understand the actions of teenagers in which we use the example of other people's opinions, something we can see to be true from my research
Makes logical sense. Have seen things like this with other branches of psychology (diagnosis self fulfilling prophecies)
Still allows us to focus on teenagers as they have higher issues with self esteem (biological link) as well as the expectation and burnout as a subsequent factor
