Network Performance
Bandwidth
The amount of data that can be transferred in a given time
Greater the Bandwidth the better the networks performance
Performance can decrease if there are too many users
Choice of hardware
Can have a big impact on the speed of a network
Topology
How the computers are laid out and connected together
Wired or Wireless
Wired
Usually faster
More reliable
Wireless
Depends on how well a computer can pick up the signal
Rarely better than a wired connection
Benefits of Networks
Manage Computers
Fix Problems
Help Users
Reset passwords
Update Software
Data Exchange
Data can be sent between computers without the need for external storage
Resource sharing
Printers
Scanners
Internet connections
Transmission media
Coaxial cable
Wired
Insulated copper wire surrounded by a metal mesh
Metal mesh protects it from interference
Often used for cable television
Fibre optic cables
Thin strands of glass
Transmits binary data as pulses of light
Advantages
Do not suffer interferences
Very high bandwidth
Appropriate for long distant communication
Twisted pair copper cable
Often referred to as Ethernet Cable
8 wires which are twisted into pairs
Reduce interference from other signals and improve transmission speed
Different ratings to indicate how quickly data can be transferred
Types of Networks
LAN
Local Area Network
A collection of computers connected over a small geographical area
Typically found in homes, schools and small companies
Set up and maintained by the organisation that uses it
WAN
Wide Area Network
A collection of computers connected over a small geographical area
Used by multinational organisations that have international offices they need to connect to
Usually rented from a large telecommunications company because they are expensive to setup
The internet is the largest WAN in the world
PAN
Personal Area Network
A network used to connect a single users device in their workspace
A bluetooth headset would be an example
A Network is a collection of connected computers
Communicate by sending data between themselves
