Chaucer is regarded as the father of English Literature and as the first major secular poet. His language gradually became standard English
The French period: he used the French romance style for his works. The Romaunt of the Rose was written in this period and it deals with courtly love.
The Italian period: in this period he shows a greater maturity in the use of the metres. The House of Fame was written in this period and it is a masterpiece of comic fantasy. It deals with the vanity of human wishes.
The English period: in this period he employs a greater realism. Canterbury Tales belongs to this period.
Canterbury is the symbol of the celestial city, the end of life; while the journey of the pilgrims becomes the allegory of the course of human life. The pilgrimage is also a key metaphor for life from the religious sphere. We are all pilgrims on the way to the heavenly city, and every journey reflects the basic pattern of existence
