Cultural Anthropology
Culture
-
ethnocentrism: the tendency to view the world through ones own cultural filters - related to hegemonic narratives
-
Class
definition: a category of individuals within a society who have similar access to economic and social resources
class impacts how people are able to meet their basic needs - depending on your class you could be more susceptible to structural violence
class intersects with race, gender, nationality, etc. to produce different access to resources
Nationalism
-
definition: the faith in the nation itself that draws from a mythical historical past and the idea that the future is one that is held within the nation
nations are not states, but they can overlap
state definition: politically organized territory with a centralized government and definite boundaries
Hegemony
definition: the power of a dominant group or class to produce the willing consent of people below them to control the organization of their social life in a way that will neither harm nor benefit them
hegemonic narratives influence how people act in society - it is related to how people view race, gender, class, and culture
hegemony is seen in many things throughout life such as the pressing influence of social media, popular books, the school system, and even family history/rules
-
Race
race is NOT biological, the different race groups that we see today were created by the dominant groups in order to better maintain economic power - race today is a social construct
Bacon's Rebellion is an example of how different racial groups were created in order for the people in power to better control those under them - they chose the method of divide and conquer, and they divided the people by their skin color
racism: the state sanctioned or extralegal production and exploitation of a group differentiated vulnerability to premature death
Gender
gender and sex are two different things. Your sex is based off of the biological genitalia you were born with, but your gender is based off of how you view yourself
in today's society, gender is a social construct, shaped by hegemonic narratives and culture. But really gender is a spectrum and people can decide for themselves what their gender is based on how they feel
