Civics and Government PRAXIS Review
Government:
the structures and processes a group of people observes in determining who has power, what choices to make, and what rules to follow and enforce.
Branches of Government
Executive
: enfore the laws
the
President
is responsible for implementing and forcing the laws written by Congress (Must be 35 or older and a natural born citizen).
Appoints
Cabinet Members
: advise the President
the
Vice President
casts the final vote in case of a tie. Helps speak for the president if he is unable to do so
Legislative
Congress
: bicameral legislature
House of Representatives
: number of representatives is based on state’s population(is proportional), 2 year terms (435 representatives with each state having at least one, can serve infinitely but have to run for re-election. Must be 25 years old to run.)
Senate
: 2 representatives per state (100 total), 6 year terms (about ⅓ of senators are elected every two years)
Judicial
: Interpret the Law
Supreme Court
is compromised of 9 Justices to interpret the Constitution
Relationship between State and Federal Governments
Federalism
: separation of national, state, and local governments
Enumerated Powers
: things specifically in the Constitution that the Federal government can do (run a post office, maintain army or navy, etc.)
Reserved Powers
: things the States have the power to do (education, marriage laws, etc)
Concurrent Powers
: Shared between all three levels of government (power to tax) (local level tax = sales tax and property tax)
Political Science:
an advanced study of how individuals are influenced to support or not support certain things.
Political Parties:
Republican:
right-leaning to moderate, traditional views, believe in a strong defense, cutting taxes and spending
Democrat:
left-leaning to moderate, ideological views, government should help citizens with resources, environmentalists
Independent:
moderates, someone who doesn’t align themselves with a political party, fall on both ends for various things
Electoral College:
Choosing a President is not based on a popular vote. HOR and Senate are added together to create number of Electors for each state (Kansas has 6, CA has 54, etc)
Civics:
the role of the individual in government. Your rights and responsibilities as a citizen (jury duty, paying taxes, obeying laws, etc.)
