Types of Rock
Metamorphic
Metamorphic rocks form from heat and pressure changing the original or parent rock into a completely new rock
The parent rock can either be sedimentary, igneous, or even another metamorphic rock
”metamorphic” comes from Greek term “to change form”
Most metamorphic changes occur in the region between the upper mantle and a few kilometers below Earth’s surface.
Types of Metamorphism
Contact metamorphism=changes the rock by magma raising the temperature of the local area.
Regional metamorphism=metamorphism that occurs over broad areas of the crust occurs when two techtonic plates collide.

Partial Melting
Partial Melting= process whereby some minerals melt at low temperatures while other minerals remain solid
fractionak crystallization=different minerals form at different temperatures
Pressure
Confining pressure= pressure associated with burial.
Directed pressure= greater in one direction than others
Classification of Metamorphic Rock
Foliated texture
—formed under high temperatures and elevated, directed pressure
Non foliated texture
-formed under high temperatures and even, confining pressure
