DECIMAL NUMBERS AND PERCENTAGES - Coggle Diagram
DECIMAL NUMBERS AND PERCENTAGES
arrow cards- 3 + 0.4 + 0.05 = 3.45
splitting into hundreds, tens, ones, etc
ones, tenths, hundreds
decimals
teach in context of money/ other real-life contexts
NUMBER LINES for converting fractions to decimals (shows equivalent fractions & decimals)
multiplication and division involving decimals in real-life context
visual by multiplying things by 10
"moving the decimal point"- doesn't happen, all the numbers are moving
to multiply by 0.4, multiply by 4 then divide by 10
teaching maths-
"fake maths"- make connections between maths in classroom and real life
comics to introduce maths- about going shopping, money off, etc
makes it more fun/ engaging
ask questions such as-"what are decimal numbers and where may we come across these in our day to day lives?"
money
petrol (litres)
distances
weighing/ cooking
height
what are decimal numbers?
number of digits AFTER the decimal point shows the size of our pieces
number of digits shows what the denominator would be if our number was written as a fraction eg. two digits after= hundreds (4.38= 4 and 38/100)
make connection between useful fractions and decimals eg. 1/2 = 5/10 = 0.5
representing using pictures- colour in 0.25 of the squares (have 100 squares, colour in 25 to help visualise)
rounding to ? dp- 5 and up round up, 4 and below round down. look at the dp one more than what you want eg. 2 dp, look at the third one and see what to do with second one
adding or subtracting decimals
line up dps, use 0 as a place holder
multiplying decimal numbers procedurally- multiply normally, ignoring dps, put dp in the answer- will have as many dps as the two original numbers combined (worked ex. in written notes)
dividing a decimal- can turn to whole numbers like multiplication
percentages- real life eg. discounts, surveys
fractions, decimals and percentages equivalents are important for understanding
