Overview of Theme:
MULTIMEDIA and NEW MEDIA - alternative contemporary art forms in South Africa
Content/concepts/skills
- Demonstrate critical analytical writing and research skills in the study of art within historical and cultural contexts from multiple sources.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the historical context and stylistic evolution of a selection of fine art, applied art and craft forms.
- Independently research opportunities that describe the relationship between knowledge and skills acquired through Visual Arts and post-school education.
- Undertake a field trip to explore career and tertiary opportunities in visual arts.
- Use appropriate terminology related to all areas of art theory to describe and discuss artworks, crafts and applied art forms both verbally and in writing.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of own and other’s research, creative processes and art products.
ASSESSMENT (Open Book)
With reference to the above statement and the visual sources, discuss:
- Formal elements of art
- Style, media, and technique
- The statement these artworks make about the artist and the art world in general
- What is your opinion about their statements? Substantiate your answer.
Write an essay (500 words/1 page) in which you discuss at least two specific artworks that you have studied where artist(s) have made use of multimedia or popular art forms in a contemporary way.
Discuss the figures by refering to the following:
- The visual appearance of the works
- The use of media
- Use of colour
- Use of symbols
- Possible meanings/interpretations
- The difference between these works and more traditional forms
Discuss the work of any contemporary artist(s) which makes use of non-traditional media and/or techniques to convey a message of our time. Refer to specific works in your answer (500 words/1 page)
Outstanding Achievement Criteria
- Demonstrates exceptional ability to respond to and analyse artworks in relation to their cultural, social, political and historical contexts.
- Shows outstanding ability in the use of appropriate visual arts terminology.
- Demonstrates extremely well-developed writing and research skills in the study of art.
- Shows exceptional insight and understanding and uses divergent approaches.

3 hours (6x 30min lessons) + half-day excursion + afterschool time for group activities
