- - - - Matter (man) is evil, spirit (God) is good
      - Salvation is escape from the body achieved through special knowledge
      - Christ either only seemed to have a body or the divine Christ joined the man Jesus at baptism and left before he died
      - Since the body is evil it is to be treated harshly (asceticism)
      - Since matter not breaking God's law is evil then breaking the law is of no consequence
- - - - A true Spirit
        
        God is love in nature, essence, will and works
        
        And who did God love but the morally bankrupt and poor
        
        The objects of his love should be the objects of ours, what are we loving
      - Love is from God, whoever loves is of true genealogy (birth) and relationship (knows) with God.
    - - A false spirit
      - Does not love - again what is not loving
    - - The gospel - That before we we knew God we were known by God, that God loved us first and sent his Son Jesus Christ in the flesh as a atoning sacrifice for our sins. This is the ultimate expression of love
    - - Our love is a reflection of God's love for us v10, 19. Like the true spirit the true people are known by love
        
        What is love? - What is God' love for us? Does it ignore sin? No, but it it is sacrifice for the sinful
    - - The love for one another is how we see God the Father - through his love in the world
    - - The Holy Spirit works within us and testifies to himself
        
        Mutual inhabitation, him in us and us in him. He has given us the Spirit, the fruit of the Spirit to accomplish this love
    - - And God the Father sent his son to earth
    - - This is like a statement of faith
    - - We have confidence because of the love of God. We don't fear judgement.
    - - To fear (be afraid) God is to not know him or his love
        
        Respect his authority still
    - - Hating your brother or sister. What is hating?
    - - Our love for God must be shown in love for those who have a new nature and derivation from him
  - - - Not every spirit, everything said in church is true. in fact false teaching is common.
        
        Spirits can be discerned and dsitinguished from each other
        
        The church is a natural place for false teaching
        
        Spirits can be known by doctrine not feelings
    - - How to recognise the truth -from the spirit of God/truth
        
        Acknowledging Jesus as God in the flesh
        
        Acknowledging his death and resurrection
        
        No need for fear as in us is greater. We have already won
      - What is the spirit of the antichrist?
      - How to recognise false spirit, spirit of the antichrist/falsehood
        
        Denying Jesus as God in the flesh
    - - The spirit of God in you is greater than the devil in the world
    - - They speak as the world
      - They are from the world, The world listens to them
        
        They are part of the show, pleasure, interests, wisdom of this world and preach the messiah off this world. The kingdom and dominion of this world.
        
        Enviromentalism, utopianism
    - - Those of God listen to us
        
        Don't worry if no one else listens, the godly listen and hear
      - The world doesn't listen to us
