TOEFL READING PART - Coggle Diagram

- - - - :one: Think about the context, and ask yourself:
        What is the general idea of the passage?
        What does the writer want to say with this passage?
      - :two: Put yourself in the position of the rider and ask yourself:
        If I were the writer why would I say that?
        Which message do I want to convey?
- - - - :two: Make the reference check
        
        Type 2: What does this word refer to?
        
        :book: Read the relevant part of the passage.
        
        :question:Then have a look at the answer again and ask yourself:
        If the word refers to that word, does this make sense?
        If it does not make sense, the answer is wrong.
        If it does make sense, check the remaining answers and choose the one that you think fits best.
      - :one: Insert each answer
        
        Type 1: What does this word mean?
        
        :book: Read the relevant part in the passage and understand the context in which the word appears.
        
        :question:Then replace the relevant word with every answer and ask yourself:
        Does this make sense? If it does not make sense, the answer is wrong.
        If it does, check the remaining answers and choose the one that you think fits best.

        :book: Read each answer and make sure that you understand the meaning.
        
        :recycle:After that go back to the passage and check which of the information given in the answers you can find in the passage.
        
        :silhouette:Pay attention if an answer uses the same words that appear in the passage. Sometimes these answers change the meaning and are therefore wrong.

        :recycle:Some of the answers talk about points that are not mentioned in the TOEFL Reading passage.
        :!?:Have a look at each answer and then go to the passage and figure out which answers do not appear in the passage.
        :red_cross:You can eliminate these answers immediately.
        
        :!!:Other answers talk about minor points in the passage:
        :recycle:Go to the part of the passage where the information is mentioned and think about the context.
        :question:Then ask yourself: Is this a major point or a minor point? If it is a minor point, eliminate this answer. The answers that are left are correct.
- - - - :red_cross:Eliminate Wrong Answers
        
        Read each answer and make sure that you understand the meaning.
        
        After that go back to the passage and check which of the information given in the answers you can find in the passage.
        If you can find the information in the passage, the answer is wrong.
        If you cannot find it, the answer is correct.
- - - - :warning:Trial and Error
        
        Read the relevant part in the passage to get a general idea of what it is about.
        
        Take the sentence and insert it in each square. Ask yourself: Does this make sense?
        
        Choose the square that makes the most sense.
- - - - :red_cross: Eliminate and Categorize
        
        Some of the answers are not mentioned in the passage or change information.
        
        Have a look at each answer, then go to the relevant part of the passage and check whether the information given appears in the passage. If it appears, have a look at the context and figure out to which category it belongs.
- - - - Type 1 asks you about the function of an idea that is stated in the passage.
        
        Read the passage closely and have a look at the context.
        Then ask yourself: Why does the author do that?
        
        Consider the context
      - Type 2 asks you about the rhetorical function of something.
        
        Eliminate those answers that do not appear in the passage first.
        Then have a look at the remaining answers and ask yourself: Does the writer do that in order to show that?
        
        Eliminate and check
- - - - :book: Read the first answer choice and ask yourself: Does this sentence express the same meaning as the highlighted sentence? If it does not, you can eliminate it immediately.
      - :warning:If it does, go on and have a look at the other answer choices and figure out whether they express the meaning of the sentence given better.
      - :check::The correct sentence will be paragraphed so it is different than the highlighted one, but still convey all the important information.
      - :green_cross:Incorrect sentences will represent a detail or concept inaccurately, leave out an important detail, change the original meaning of the sentence.
- - - - :book:Read the entire sentence with the word in it; see if the referent is easy to understand.
      - :check:Determine what kind of reference word is being used.
      - :no_entry:Determine whether the word is singular or plural.
      - :star:Establish the context around both the reference word.
      - :pencil2:Plug in your answer choice in place of the reference word to double-check your answer.
