The Maya civilization originated around 600 BCE. It was located in territories of present-day Belize, Guatemala, El Salvador, and Honduras. Each city operated as a center for religion and trade with temples, palaces, schools, libraries, hospitals, and sports arenas. Based on archaeological evidence, the Maya civilization had a complex social structure, highly developed written language, intricate artwork, elaborate religious and funeral practices, sporting events, and technological advancements. Despite all of these advances, most of the Maya cities were abandoned by 900 CE.
