Population Ecology
-
Emergent properties
That individuals who conform them do not, because of the fact that populations are, themselves, groups of individuals
-
Density
Describes how close individuals are with each other, i.e. the number of organisms per unit of area or volume.
Distribution pattern
Refers to the order of organisms in a population, which can be:
Aggregated
When populations form groups such as lions, zebras, wolves, rats, etc.
Random
Randomly distributed on a territory.
They are common in low-density populations or endangered species, including jaguars, tigers, etc.
Uniform
The pattern is regular, occurs in areas of crops.
Demographic Parameters
These are the parameters that lead to numerical changes in populations.
There are four kinds of demographic parameters:
-
-
Immigration rate
Measurement of the movement of individuals between populations, specifically the number of individuals entering the population.
Emigration rate
Measurement of the movement of individuals between populations, specifically the number of individuals leaving the population.
-
Abiotic
Prevent populations from overgrowing, either reducing their reproductive capacity or dying.
These abiotic conditions can be very intense
Biotic
There are factors that regulate the size of populations allowing population growth when population density is low and limiting it when it is high
This type is called density-dependent factors.
