How his environment is changing around him and the fact that he is accepting them - how environment changes cultural values as well as the identity we have.
Repetition of 'Dung' and other synonyms relating to waste - shows and signifies how if there is no purpose for these living beings then they won't live and need to be thrown out just like waste.

'Isn't it better for them now' - Ambiguity and dual meaning as it could be directed at Heaney, asking if it is actually better to reveal harsh truths to him now rather than later.
He also has to accept his fate - power and justice - identity
'Wet gloves' - juxtaposition between dead kittens with more child-like imagery.
Heaney's view changes as he starts to form less of a protective barrier between him and harsh realities which also foreshadows his future view on the nature of this.
