Ecosystems - Coggle Diagram
Ecosystems
Trophic Levels: levels of organisms on a food chain or food web.
Secondary Consumers: Animals who eat Primary Consumers (Carnivores)
Primary Consumers: Animals who eat producers (Herbivores)
Tertiary Consumers: Animals who eat Secondary Consumers
Producers: Self-sustaining; they get their food from the sun. Examples: plants, algae
Quaternary Consumers: Animals who eat Tertiary Consumers. Not all ecosystems have them.
Energy and matter are transferred through trophic levels. At each level, energy is lost as heat, so ecosystems require a continuous input of energy to sustain them.
Herbivores, Carnivores, Omnivores
Herbivore - an animal that eats plants only (Herb meaning plant)
Carnivore - an animal that eats meat only (Carn meaning meat)
Omnivore - an animal that eats plants and meat (Omni meaning all)
Difference between food chain and food web:
Food Chain: A diagram showing only one example of the food of a certain species
Food web: A diagram that shows all of the different foods a certain species consumes.
Biodiversity: The variety of different populations in an environment.
The more biodiversity, the better, because, for example, if a Species A preys on Species B and Species C, if Species B dies, they still have Species C. [However, it would be best for Species A to eat Species B, C, D, E, F, G... ]
Keystone Species
Includes bees, otters, wolves, elephants, etc.
A species. that. if removed from an ecosystem, will cause the entire ecosystem to collapse.
Invasive Species - a species that is brought, purposely or accidentally, to a new environment where it has no natural predators and lots of food, so, until another animal starts eating them, they will reproduce a lot and make lots of babies.
Examples: Feral pigs, Malaria mosquitoes, Yellow Crazy Ants, Domestic Cats,
Ecosystem: A community of populations in a certain area, close enough for potential interaction
Biomass: the total mass of organisms in a given area or volume.
Ecological Niche - Describes a species' functional position in the ecosystem, including its habitat and its relationships with other species.
