- - - - He recalled Mother White’s assurance that the Lord had shown her that this neglected, barren farm would, under His blessing, become a “great center of educational work, a spectacle to the world, to angels, and to men.” She had called it a “beautiful farm.” Percy knew that God must have chosen the spot Himself.
      - “I don’t think you’d better see her,” the husband warned. When Miz Sallie gets in a tantrum, she acts like the very devil.”
      - Percy softened his voice even more. “Miz Sallie, were you ever a Christian?” He didn’t know why he had asked her that question. The words had just come to him. He saw her eyes fill with tears. She burst into sobbing and said, “Oh, I used to be. My father was a Methodist minister, and he brought me up to be a Christian woman, but it seems as though the very devil has gotten into me.”
      - The good mood induced by their prayers had vanished. She seemed to know that something had touched her when they prayed, but now the perverse spirit had entered her mind again. She veered back and forth between wanting to sell and not wanting to sell.
      - Mrs. Druillard was Ed’s aunt and affectionately called by all Mother D. She had one of the shrewdest financial heads in the denomination....“What were you boys thinking of,” Mother D interrupted, “to involve yourselves in a deal so far beyond your resources?”
      - They went at once to see Mother White and told her, “Mother White, we have the place.” “Well, Brother Sutherland,” she gave them her warmest smile, “you boys will never know how many angels worked to help you get it.”
      - [Magan] had passed the acid test of faith required to step out on an unconditional belief in the counsel of Mother Ellen White. “We do not have faith,” he told his friend Percy, “unless we do believe in something that does seem out of reach of the human mind.”
    - - "[Ed] saw that they had indeed come up to the edge of the farm and it looked even worse than he remembered it."
      - He glanced at Mother White and saw her eyes glistening with enthusiasm. “Ah,” she exclaimed, “this looks like a place I have seen in vision. This is the land where God wants Sutherland and Magan to start their training school.”
      - Ed felt a peculiar sinking of his heart, but he decided to say nothing.
      - “I think of it just as little as I can,” Magan replied. “It’s too big a farm for Ed and me. It’s rocky and worn out and barren. It will take more money than we have - “
      - At last, after much talk, they decided that they could not and would not be drawn into anything so large, so expensive, and so hopeless. Yet neither of them felt good about the decision, and both of them knew in their deepest hearts that going against Mother White’s counsel amounted, somehow, to going against God. A heaviness of heart descended upon them.
      - Me - but like the parable, the founders decided, though lacking its luster, they were going to make use of their Master's talent
      - They prayed to the Almighty for help. And courage flowed into them in such abundant measure that at no future time did they doubt that God had led them in this venture, and that He would take charge and direct all that concerned the whole undertaking.
  - - - “Let’s do it, Ed,” Magan said. “Let’s move Battle Creek College to a big farm and give worthy young people a chance.
      - That year they erected the first buildings in the beautiful but mosquito-infested maple woods behind the farmhouse and the proposed campus. These buildings consisted of small cottages and cabins and an assembly hall, octagonal in shape and screened for summer use. Percy Magan’s wife gave the money - her whole inheritance from her father - for this hall.
      - Facing such opposition, financial shortage, and a divided faculty along with the austerities of the new campus, Sutherland and Magan walked by faith alone.
    - - Not only did the critics object to the new location; they also objected to the new emphasis on the Word of God as the central authority in all lines of study. The new focus on the Bible seemed impractical to many students; and they, with a number of ministers, withdrew their support. They felt that Sutherland and Magan were wrong. 9
      - [White] explained that, although these men were young, God desired to place them “on vantage ground.” She rebuked their critics and assured them that God did not want these young men replaced by older ones. 9
      - They had suffered severe criticism for their efforts to remove the college from Battle Creek, also for their heavy emphasis on the Bible as the source of all knowledge and the chief textbook for education in Christian schools. 10
    - - They resolved to make the new college self-supporting. 10
      - That first winter they faced a money shortage so desperate that the business office, with extreme difficulty, paid the teachers. Students endured hardships and inconveniences in their living quarters - the unheated cottages. 10

      - “If the youth can have but a onesided education, a knowledge of the sciences or a knowledge of labor for practical life, let it be the latter.” 5 White

      - “The work of cultivating the soil, planting trees, vines and seeds is educational in the highest sense.” 6
