Reflection: Class Contribution
Readings
Usually I do readings before doing homework or before the midterm
This helps me be sure on my answers or to clear up any confusion
Anytime I do not understand something in class, I will also check the readings, usually shortly after class
Study devices
I made flashcards for the IPA alphabet
These are helpful to get rid of the notion that the IPA symbols sound like English letters
Additionally, I added example words to make the symbols more memorable
This helps with vowels especially, as they are harder distinguish between themselves
I also study with Nick outside of class
This is highly beneficial for three reasons
Firstly, he and I live in the same dorm, so organizing revision sessions is efficient and convenient
Secondly, since we interact outside of class, we often relate events to topics discussed in class
Lastly, because we were both raised under different environments, we regularly run into pronunciation differences
He pronounces 'literally' as [lɪtərəli] while I pronounce it as [lɪʧərəli], which I've been told is non-American
Pros
The systems I use help me memorize class material effectively
They also do not take too much time, which would mess with my shedule
Easily replicable, i.e., after doing them I can use them again
Cons
More in-class contributions
Answering more questions
I have a bad habit of studying mostly before assignments/tests
Implement concrete times in my schedule dedicated to lingustics
Go to office hours
