Life cycle in H&D
Epidemiological Transition (ET)
Omran 1971
H&D patterns change in societies influenced by demog transitions + rate of econ dvlpt & trasitions
"Young" society
= communicable infectious diseases (CD) & nutritional deficiencies dominate
- Children = diarrhoea & acute resp infections (incl measles & malaria)
- Pregnant women = fetal loss, perinatal mortality from bleeding & infection
- Adults = TB + diseases related to poverty are important causes of morbidity (disability) & mortality (death)
"Grown up" society
- Accidents (injuries) & violence-related morbidity & mortality increases -- esp among young
- Infectious diseases (TB) prevail
- Chronic NCDs increase -- esp in urban pops
"Aging" society
= NCDs predominate
- DM2 & CVDs
- Cancer & degenerative disorders
-
Demog Transition (DT)
= transition from high birth & death rates to low birth & death rates as a country devlps from a pre-industrial to an industrialized econ system=> Typically demonstrated through a demog transition model (DTM)
- Pink: repro declines slowly
- Blue: mortality declines fast
- Red: pop increases fast 1st, then stabilizes
-> Area b/w repro & mortality = "the pop trap"
Nutritional Transition (NT)
= the shift in dietary consumption & energy expenditure that coincides with econ, demog, & epi changes
-> Contributing factors: Modernization, urbanization, economic development, and increased wealth lead to predictable shifts in diet
5 Patterns:
- Hunter gatherer = inds live highly active lifestyles, hunting & foraging for food. Diets typically are rich in fibrous plants & high in protein from lean wild animals.
- Early Agri = Famine is common, slowing inds growth & decreasing their body fat.
- End of famine = Famine recedes as Y rises & nutrition improves.
- Overeating = As Y continues to rise, inds have access to an abundance of high-calorie foods, & become less active, leading to increases in obesity & related chronic diseases (ie diabetes & CVD)
- Behavior Change = In response to increasing rates of obesity & related chronic diseases, inds change their behavior & communities promote behavior changes

Econ Dvlpt Transition
Social & econ determinants of health (for l-t changes in mortality rates of heart disease & chronic NCDs):
- Econ growth
- Market integration
- FDIs
- Urbanization
--> x3 stronger relationship than pop's aging
