CRIME CLASSIFICATION
FELONIES
1) a serious crime
2) a crime punishable by death or imprisonment for more than one year
3) the examples: treason, murder, rape, burglary, hijacking, kidnapping and arson
MISDEMEANORS
1) less serious crime
2) punishable by exactly one year or less
3) the examples: petty theft, prostitution, public intoxication, simple assault, disorderly conduct, trespass, shoplifting, vandalism, reckless driving, indecent exposure, and possession of cannabis
VIOLATIONS

AN INDICTABLE OFFENCES (an offence where the defendant - trying by jury)

PRIMARY CATEGORIES OF CRIMES
1) CRIMES AGAINST PERSONS (such as murder, rape, child abuse, domestic abuse and assault)
those whose victims are always individuals
physical or mental harm to another person
2) CRIMES AGAINST PROPERTY (theft crimes, including burglary, larceny, robbery, auto theft, and shoplifting)
the object - money, property, or some other benefit
typically involve interference with the property of another party
3) CRIMES AGAINST SOCIETY (disorderly conduct,gambling, prostitution, public lewdness, drug violations)
typically victimless crimes in which property - not the object
