Week 11: Mental Health Promotion
There is no health promotion without mental heath promotion
mental health effects everyone and also permeates into every sector ; therefore an inter-sectoral and comprehensive approach to mental health promotion is required
covid 19 has illuminated many of its secondary effects such as deteriorating mental health in Canadians due to social determinants of health
mental health promotion is a priority for the canadian government
in 2012, mental health commission of canada (MHCC) released its first mental health strategy entitled "changing directions, changing lives"
but even though it is a priority, it hasn't always got the attention it deserves
mental health promotion will require an overlapping of services within defined roles
defined roles by Hinrichsen et al., : 1) decision maker, 2) MHP specialist, 3) MHP coordinator 4) MHP practitioner and 5) end user
but each community should also have a MHP Specialist and each organization should have a MHP coordinator
i really love this approach but i dont think that enough people in public health are emphasizing mental health promotion in this way and by that effect, these ideas are being wasted. I hope that in the future, mental health promotion is more valued and implementated.
There are many challenges to adequate mental health promotion
lack of common agenda
lack of defined roles for mental health promotion; what happens is then practitioners say that it is not our role; not our responsibility or not our area of expertise
mental health promotion should be intersect-oral; 8 areas areas are defined
promotion of infant and maternal health
cultivate child and adolescent mental health and wellbeing
implement parenting and family strengthening programmes
support mentally healthy workplaces
initiate community empowerment programmes
incorporate mental health promotion within health services
enhance public awareness of ways to promoting positive mental health and reducing stigma associated with mental ill health
adopt a "mental health in all policies" approach
