Both sides in World War I paid a tremendous price in terms of human life. 8.5 soldiers died and 21 million were wounded. In addition, the war led to the death of countless civilizations because of starvation, disease, and slaughter. Because of this, an entire generation of Europeans wiped out.
The war also had a devastating economic impact on Europe. The great conflict drained the treasures of European countries. One account put the total cost of the war at $338 billion

The Allies win the war
With the United States finally joining the war, The balance seemed to change and favor the Allies
Before this happened, events that happened in russia gave germany a victory on the eastern front which gave hope to the Central powers.
In March 1917, civil unrest in russia, due to their shortage of fuel and food,
forced czar Nicholas to step down
The new government promised to stay in the war but by 1917, nearly 5.5 million Russian soldiers were wounded, killed, or imprisoned. A revolution shortly followed after 8 months of the new government.
The communist leader named Vladimir ilyich Lenin, wanted to pull russia out of the war and started talks of peace to germany for a truce.
In March,1918, Germany and Russia signed a Treaty of Brest-Litovsk which ended the war for Russia.
In March, 1918, Germany mounted one final, huge attack on the Allies in France. The Germans again reached the Marne River which meant Paris was 40 miles away.
By this time, the german army has noticeably became weaker. All the traveling they did exhausted the men and supplies and the Allies noticed this and launched a counter attack with the aid of 140,000 U.S troops.
