type of muscles
skeletal muscle
Known as VOLUNTARY in nature (under your control). Connected to the skeleton via tendons to create movement in sport.
-
smooth muscle
Involuntary muscle (like cardiac muscle). Located in the walls of internal organs such as the digestive system.
-
muscle fibres
type I (slow twitch)
these contract slowly and with less force. They fatigue slowly and are far more suited aerobic activities such as long distance running or swimming (energy is produced using Oxygen).
Type II (fast twitch)
These muscles can produce high levels of force and contract quickly. The muscles fatigue faster as are less reliant on oxygen. These fibres are suited to power, speed and strength exercises. Good examples include sprint events such as the 100m or long jump.
