Meibomian Cyst
Diagnosis
-
-
-
-
Firm, painless, localized eyelid swelling, developed slowly over several weeks
-
-
-
Signs of minor conjunctival infection which are secondary to mechanical irritation or manipulation of the eye by the patient
-
-
Management
-
Manage any co-existing risk factors to reduce the risk of recurrent episodes eg chronic blepharitis, seborrhoeic dermatitis and acne rosacea.
If no improvement or does not resolve after 4 weeks conservative treatment - consider no treatment if small/asymptomatic or referral to opthalmologist.
-
Use of warm compress to affected area 10-15 minutes up to five times per day and use of gentle massage following compress.

Red flags
-
-
Firm, warm, tender, erythematous, oedematous eyelid suggestive of periorbital or orbital cellulitis
Definition: A meibomian cyst is a sterile inflammatory granuloma caused by the obstruction of a sebaceous gland. The glands are located on the eyelid margin - obstruction of the gland duct causes enlargement leading to rupture. The cyst may develop acutely or insidiously, it may drain spontaneously or persist as a chronic nodule. Clinically, appears similar to a stye however usually less painful and larger in size.
