Performance characteristics of metals
Stock Forms
Sheet: is a large flat sections of metals in varying thickness from less than 1mm up to approximately 3mm
Plate: is generally thicker than 3mm and narrower than sheet metals.
Bar: is solid form, flat bar, round bar or hexagonal bar.
Tube form: is hollow in cross section and can be square, retangular (also called box section), round or hexagonal
Structural angular: shapes such as H beams, L beams, (angel), I beams, tee bar and chanel
Characteristics of metals
Approximately 25 percent of the earth's crust is made up of metal ores.
Bauxite, which aluminium is made from, is most common ore.
Raw metal is extracted from the ore through a combination of crushing, smelting or heating, with addition of chemicals and huge amounts of electrical energy.
Metals can easily be recycled (due to their low melt point.
Copper is the metal and the ore is Chalcopyrite
Aluminum is the metal and the ore is Bauxite
Tin is the metal and the ore is the Cassiterite
Zinc is the metal and the ore is Zinc blende
Ferrous metal
A meta; containing mostly iron and carbon
Non- ferrous metal
A metal that does not contain iron
Alloy
A metal made of two or more metals, or combining two or more elements, one of which must be a metal.
