Sharon's coggle- sleep enhancement. Nurse Adam is visiting Frank, an 80 year old retired construction worker. He was diagnosed with PD 5 years ago. Frank lives with his wife and daughter. His daughter works as a social worker for the government. He enjoys going on daily walks and spending time with his friends. Recently frank has been struggling with his sleep.

Hi! I am Adam, your nurse today. How are you feeling?

Hello! I have been doing good. But recently, I have been really tired due problems falling asleep.

Have you been using sleeping pills?

Do you wake up frequently during the night?

Oh that's sad.

No I do not use them

Yes I do

Would you like me to recommend you some to try?

No thank you, I try to avoid unnecessary medications.

No problem! we can try other interventions.

Do you feel that you lie awake too long?

That is hard

Do you feel that you are not getting enough sleep

Yes I lie awake for about 3 hours.

Yes I always wake up tired.

Do you take naps during the day?

Do you have trouble staying awake

okay

Do you use any devices before going to sleep

are you physically active

That's rough

Yes, I usually watch the news till I fall asleep/

I used to go on daily walks but not anymore since i'm too tired

Occasionally, i try to avoid it.

yes I often find myself falling asleep but I try to avoid naps.

That's good. You should try to avoid naps especially during the late afternoon and evening

Watching the news can be stimulating and impair your sleep quality. You should turn off devices at least 2 hours prior.

Make sure your bedroom environment is cool and comfortable

It's good to keep informed

As an intervention you should remain active during the day. This will improve your quality of sleep

As an intervention you should fall asleep and wake up at the same time

oh

Do you drink any caffeine or alcohol prior to bed?

No I don't I heard thats bad for you

1 month after

Hi Frank. How are you feeling

I am doing much better.

Have you been using any strategies to improve your sleep

That's great to hear! you should keep a sleep journal keeping track of your sleep quantity and quality so you can keep track of your progress

I have been going on walks again with my buddies, keeping a consistent sleep schedule and adjusting my bedroom enviro to be more sleep promoting. However, I still can't break my habit of watching the news before sleeping

Thats amazing to hear that you are using so many interventions I mentioned! In terms of the news you can set alarms on your phone to remind you to turn off the TV 2 hours before bed. Or you can have your wife or daughter remind you as well

That's a good idea, I will try that going forward.

amazing!
