Parable of Wedding Banquet
Events
There was a king who prepared a wedding feast for his son
When the wedding feast was ready, the king sent his servants to call on those who were invited
Those who were invited paid no attention and didn't come to the wedding. They made excuses like having to examine a field that was just bought, having to try out newly purchased oxen, and having to stay home with wife
The king sent his servants to invite anyone they can find on the streets, good or bad, to the wedding. Soon, the wedding hall became full of guests
But when the king took a look at his guests, he saw a man without a wedding garment. The king asked him, "Friend, how are you here without a wedding garment?" and then man was speechless
The king then told his attendants "Bind him hand and food and cast him into the outer darkness. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. For many are invited, but few are chosen"
Explanation/ Meaning
The king and his son represents God and His son
A wedding banquet is an occasion of joy. The wedding banquet in parable represents the Kingdom of Heaven
The Jews believed that when the Messiah came there would be a great banquet at which all sat down
Those who were invited can be compared to the Israelites (God's chosen people)
The invitation itself can be compared to when Jesus came down to earth
Those invited did not pay attention represents the Israelites rejecting God
The excuses that they made are all lame
Inspecting a newly bought field
No one buys a field without seeing it first
Trying out five pairs of newly bought oxen
No one buys oxen without testing them first
Staying home with wife
The king inviting anyone on the streets represents God calling on the Gentiles (non-Jews).
The Kingdom of Heaven became open for everyone
People who are not worthy (you and I) are blessed to be invited
A man without wedding garments thrown into the darkness represents those who do not obey God
Just like how wedding banquets have a dress code (rules), the Kingdom of God has rules too (commandments given by God)
Those who don't follow the rules cannot enter the Kingdom of God and are punished
"The darkness where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth" represents hell
"For many are invited, but few are chosen"
Even though the Kingdom of God is open to everyone, we have to dress our best to enter. That means obeying the commandments and putting God first
Lessons
Universalism
Kingdom of God is open to everyone
Rejection and Insult
Imagine how God felt when the Israelites rejected Him
“If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first, If you belonged to the world but I have chosen you out of the world that is why the world hates you.”
Mercy and Grace
Those that are not worthy are now invited. You and I are not worthy, but we have been invited and cleansed to eat at our host's table
“Blessed is the man who will eat at the feast in the kingdom of God.”
