SCIENCE - AUTUMN 1st HALF TERM
Photosynthesis
Four things needed:
Water
Sunlight
Chlorophyll
Carbon Dioxide
Carbon Dioxide + Water with sunlight absorbed by chlorophyll = glucose and oxygen
Leaves
Broad to absorb sunlight
Have lots of chloroplasts
Bottom of leaf - tiny holes called stomata
Holes let in carbon dioxide and let out oxygen
Atoms
Smallest type of particle
An element only contains one type of atom
Compounds - 2 or more atoms chemically bonded
molecules - 2 or more atoms
Cannot be created or destroyed
Do practice questions on p.60
Mixture - not chemically bonded
Reactions
Physical - the composition doesn't change - the molecules don't change
Chemical - the composition does change
Mixing sand and water
Shredding paper
Toasting bread
Dissolving sugar in water
chopping a potato
Look at some of the main elements
C - Carbon
N - Nitrogen
H - Hydrogen
O - Oxygen
Al - aluminium
Ca - Calcium
What is CH4
MAGNETISM
Look at p.145/145
Electromagnets
Can increase the coils
Increase the current
Element - contains only one type of atom
Mixture - Two or more different substances which are not chemically bonded
Compound - Two or more different substances that are chemically bonded
Atom - smallest type of particle
Molecule - are formed when atoms join
Rock Salt Experiment - to separate the salt from the sand
What is the conservation of mass
Atoms cannot be created or destroyed
