Stabilize and Bind
Shan Zhu Yu
Sour and slightly warm. Stabilizes the Kidney essence. Also tonifies Liver and Kidney essence and yang. Stabilizes menses to stop bleeding and stops sweating as well. Slightly tonifies yin/yang/qi/essence of Liver and Kidneys.
Wu Wei Zi
Five Flavored Seed
Named five flavors because it contains all 5 flavors that act on each of the 5 yin organs. Most prominent flavor is sourness. It is warm and unique in that it is a warm herb that tonifies the yin. Has a tonifying and restraining action on the 5 yin organs but especially the Kidneys, Lung and Heart in that order.
DUI YAO - Gan Jiang, Xi Xin
Trio used together in Xiao Qing Long tang. Their role in the formula is to support warmth and yang of spleen and lungs to improve water metabolism and transform thing mucus. This then allows yang and qi to properly address the Wei level and secure the exterior. Wu Wei Zi balances the moving and dispersing nature of Gan Jiang and Xi Xin with astringency.

Lian Zi
Lotus Seed
Enters heart, kidney and spleen. Sweet, astringent and neutral. Tonifies spleen and is astringent to treat chronic diarrhea. Also nourishes the heart to calm the spirit. And treats Ht/Ki disharmony. Also tonifies kidney and stabilizes essence to improve impotence/spermatorrhea/premature ejaculation.
DUI YAO -Qian Shi
Featured together in Jin Suo Gu Jing Wan (Metal Lock Stabilize the Essence). They act to bind the Heart, Spleen and Kidney and also have a tonifying ability. It can restore Heart and Kidney disharmony. It treats premature ejaculation and urinary incontinence in the Kidney. It can bind up chronic diarrhea in the Spleen. It can also treat vaginal discharge due to deficiency of Spleen and Kidney.

Fu Pen Zi
Overturn Bedpan Seed
Enters the kidney and liver. Sweet, astringent and neutral. This herb tonifies kidney yin and essence to benefit sexual function and genitourinary problems. It possibly tonifies kidney yang as well although this is controversial. Some authors believe it is warm and tonifies yang while others believe it is neutral and only tonifies the yin. It may also benefit the eyes. It's called "overturned bedpan seed” because it improves the kidney's ability to restrain urine so you don't need a bedpan at night.
Fu Xiao Mai
Floating Little Wheat
Enters the heart. Sweet, salty and cool. This herb inhibits sweating of all different types. It is dried and shriveled wheat grain that is able to float in water, typically aged. It acts on the heart to nourish the heart qi and it is cool so that it restrains heart yang. This herb is classified under “stabilize and bind” but many authors believe it stop sweating more by cooling heat as opposed to restraining leakage. It is often paired with Huang Qi which supports the middle qi and secures the exterior to stop sweating together.
DUI YAO - Huang Qi
Used together in Mu Li San to stop sweating due to qi deficinecy. Huang Qi supports the Spleen/Lung and Wei qi to reinfoce the eterior. Fu Xiao Mai cools Heart yang to stop sweating. It also eliminates wind-damp in the Spleen. The Spleen controls the deeper part of the flesh (muscle layer) which if damp perades can diisrupt the superficial layers.

DUI YAO - Ma Huang Gen
Featured together in Mu Li San. together they stop sweating. Fu Xiao Mai cools the heart and sweat is the fluid of the heart. Ma Huang Gen goes to the Lung and exterior and inhibits all types of sweating.

Rou Dou Kou
Nutmeg
Enters spleen, stomach and large intestine. Acrid and warm. Nutmeg should always be roasted for safety. It is a stabilize and bind herb. It warms the spleen and kidneys to bind the intestines
and stop diarrhea.
DUI YAO - Bu Gu Zhi
Bu Gu Zhi acts first on the kidney and second on the spleen to tonify yang and warm. Rou Dou Kou acts first on the spleen and second on the kidney to astringe, warm and bind. Together they treat daybreak diarrhea as in Si Shen Wan due to cold and yang weakness in kidney and spleen.

He Zi
Haritake Fruit
Enters Lung, Stomach and Large Intestine. Bitter and sour. In its unprepared form (Sheng He Zi) it is used to direct lung qi downward and restrain lung qi to stop cough, transform phlegm and treat hoarse voice. In its baked form (Chao He Zi) it is used to bind the intestines and stop diarrhea.
Ma Huang Gen
Hemp Yellow Root
Enters lung. Sweet and neutral. Single function of this herb is to stop sweating. Enters the lung and goes to the exterior to stop sweating. Used in different types of sweating, whether due to yin deficiency or qi deficiency. This is the root of the Ephedra plant. It is deep and downward directing and inhibits sweat while the leaf (Ma Huang) is light and lifting and promotes sweating.
DUI YAO - Fu Xiao Mai
Featured together in Mu Li San. together they stop sweating. Fu Xiao Mai cools the heart and sweat is the fluid of the heart. Ma Huang Gen goes to the Lung and exterior and inhibits all types of sweating.

Jin Ying Zi
Golden Cherry Fruit
Enters Ki/UB, LI. Sour, astringent and neutral. Stabilizes the Kidney to secure essence and treat spermatorrhea, incontinence and enuresis. Enters the LI to treat chronic diarrhea. Must be used in conjunction with other herbs to bind the essence. Chen Shi-Duo says that you have to open the urethral orifice using water-facilitating herbs along with herbs that bind the essence and herbs that tonify to treat spermatorrhea.

Featured together in Shui Lu Er Xian Dan (Water and Earth Two Immortals Elixir). They both bind the Kidneys. Together they also treat chronic diarrhea. Jin Ying Zi addresses the LI while Qian Shi binds the Spleen.

Qian Shi
Prickly Water Lily
Enters Kidney and Spleen. Sweet, astringent and neutral. Strengthens the spleen to stop diarrhea. It expels damp thereby strengthening the spleen. Goes to the kidneys to secure the essence. It is sweet and has a tonifying quality to it, while balancing that with its ability to expel damp.

Long Gu
Dragon Bone
This is fossilized bone from different mammals. It anchors the rising yang in the heart and liver and thereby calms the spirit. Also good at restraining leakage in the kidney and Chong vessel. Unique in that it is able to restrain normal qi while allowing pathogenic qi to be expelled.
DUI YAO - Mu Li
Long Gu acts on the Liver to quiet the ethereal soul which is made of yang essence. Mu Li moves towards the Lung to act on the corporeal soul which is made up of yin essence. Long Gu enters the Heart and is better for calming the spirit while Mu Li has ability to soften hardness and is better at tonifying yin.

Mu Li
Oyster Shell
Settles and calms the spirit. Similar to Long Gu but Mu Li does not act on the heart, instead it acts on the Liver and Kidneys. It is also able to nourish the yin which Long Gu cannot do. Mu Li also softens nodules.

Ci Shi
Magnetite
Enters the kidney and liver. Acrid, salty and cold. Nourishes the liver and kidney to protect the yin and anchors the floating yang. Used in cases of dizziness and vertigo. It also benefits the kidneys to treat tinnitus and hearing deficits. Benefits the liver to improve the vision. Also helps the kidney to grasp the lung qi for pulmonary problems, and also so that the kidney can receive the clear qi to produce the essence.
DUI YAO - Shi Chang Pu
Not commonly used together but paired in Er Long Zuo Ci Wan (Pill for Deafness that is Kind to the Left Kidney). This formula is a modification of Liu Wei Di Huang Wan specifically to treat hearing loss or cicada-like tinnitus due to yin deficiency.

Hu Po
Amber
Enters the bladder, heart and liver. Sweet and neutral. This herb enters the Xue level of the liver and heart. it goes to the heart to sedate the heart. It goes to the Liver to invigorate the blood, especially used for menstrual irregularity. It also goes to the urinary bladder to promote movement of water.
Nourish the heart yin and calm the spirit
Suan Zao Ren
Sour Jujube Seed
Nourishes the Liver blood which then generates Heart blood and thereby quiets the spirit. Also inhibits sweating. Unique in that is able to tonify yin while also astringing sweat. Often paired with Zhi Mu. Suan Zao Ren nourishes heart yin while Zhi Mu directs Heart fire downward.
DUI YAO - Bai Zi Ren
Bai Zi Ren tonifies hear blood while Suan Zao Ren tonifies liver blood, together they calm the spirit.

He Huan Hua
Conjoined Happiness Flower
Gentle herb that enters that regulates the Liver qi and relieves Liver qi constraint. Also enters the Heart to calm the spirit. It acts on the Qi level. Very similar to He Huan Pi but He Huan PI acts on the blood level while He Huan Hua acts on the Qi level. Often paired with Ye Jiao Teng.
Bai Zi Ren
Arborvitae Seed
Enters the heart, kidney and large intestine. Sweet and neutral. This herb enters the heart to nourish blood and calm the spirit. Enters the kidney to nourish true yin and treat nightsweats. It enters the large intestine to moisten the intestines and treat constipation. Somewhat of a milder herb, used more as an assistant.
DUI YAO - Suan Zao Ren
Bai Zi Ren tonifies hear blood while Suan Zao Ren tonifies liver blood, together they calm the spirit.

Yuan Zhi
Profound Will
Enters the heart and lung. Bitter, acrid and slightly warm. This herb calms the spirit through 2 main mechanisms. First, it raises kidney qi and kidney yang to rise to the heart and restore heart-kidney harmony. Secondly it expels phlegm covering the heart and opens the heart orifices to resolve mental disturbances. It is a bitter herb that directs phlegm downward. It is acrid to disperse heart qi and open the orifices. Pairs very well with Suan Zao Ren. Suan Zao Ren also calms the spirit but is sour (astringent) and sweet (nourishing). So perfectly balances Yuan Zhi.
DUI YAO - Shi Chang Pu
Used together to treat phlegm obstructing the heart. Shi Chang Pu is acrid and dispersing to expel phlegm and open the heart. Yuan Zhi is bitter and warm and directs phlegm downward from the heart. Be cautious to protect the yin if using this combination.

Ye Jiao Teng
Nocturnal Comingling Vine
Enters the Heart and Liver. sweet and neutral. Nourishes the liver and heart blood to calm the spirit. This is the same plant as He Shou Wu. He Shou Wu is the root of the plant and this is the vine. Enters the Xue level of the liver and heart to nourish blood and calm the spirit. Also unblocks the channels and expels wind. It pairs well with He Huan Pi. He Huan Pi acts on the qi level of the Heart and Spleen while Ye Jiao Teng acts on the Xue level of the Heart and Liver. He Huan Pi also invigorates blood to strengthen the sinews while Ye Jiao Teng expels wind from the collaterals.
