Settling the West, 1865–1890
In this chapter, the influence on the Native American population, increased farming equipment, and the movement of humans into the Great Plains are all discussed.
Miners and Ranchers
Main ideas
• Precious mineral deposits, including those containing gold, silver, and copper, have been found.
• Frontier villages quickly developed into boomtowns, which are tiny cities.
• Although new mining technologies, such hydraulic mining, made it possible to remove and treat enormous amounts of soil, the environmental cost was high.
• New states were created as a result of rapid population increase, including Colorado, North and South Dakota, Nevada, Arizona, and Montana.
• One reason ranching became a lucrative industry and cattle drives came to an end was the barbed wire fence that surrounded the open range.
• Railroads made it simple to transport cattle to the East, but conflicts between East Coast settlers and Mexican Americans over land that frequently originated with Spanish land grants also occurred.
Farming the Plains
Main ideas
• Railroads brought settlers, lumber, coal, and other resources to the plains.
• Bonanza farming allowed farmers to organize businesses and pay labor to plant thousands of acres, which eventually produced significant profits.
• New farming technology, like Deere's steel-tipped plow, made it easier to farm on hard land. The Homestead Act, implemented in 1862, encouraged people to travel west
Native Americans
Main ideas
• For ownership and use of the land, miners, ranchers, and farmers faced up against the nomadic Native Americans.
• Reservations were founded and Native Americans were frequently compelled to transfer to their new homes after a number of disputes that resulted in killings, such as the Fetterman Massacre and the Sand Creek Massacre.
• In the Battle of the Little Bighorn, George A. Custer disobeyed orders and assaulted the Lakota and Cheyenne, who ultimately defeated him.
