Electricity

electromotive force (ε)
-
-
definition: the amount of work done per unit charge by a power supply in an electrical circuit
ε = E / Q

Kirchoff's Laws
1st law:
the sum of currents entering a junction is equal to the sum of currents leaving the junction
-due to conservation of charge
2nd law:
in a closed circuit loop, the sum of the potential differences is equal to the sum of the electromotive forces
∴ V = V1 + V2 + V3
-
resistance
-
caused by the repeated collisions between the charge carriers and the positive ions of the substance
Ohm's Law
current is proportional to voltage across an ohmic conductor provided the physical conditions do not change
