Why people live where they do in SA
Reasons for the location of settlements: People live where they can make a living. For farmers, this means a place where the climate and soil are good for farming. People who work in mines live near an area where the rock contains useful minerals
Rural and urban areas: towns and cities = urban areas. 6 out of every 10 South Africans live in urban areas. farms and villages = rural areas. 4 out of every 10 South Africans live in rural areas. people that live in rural areas mostly work on the land. urban areas have higher population density. People that work in urban areas usually work in shops offices and factiories
population graphs(pyramids)
A population pyramid is a way to visualize two variables age and sex. used by demographers who study populations. a population pyramid is a graph of ages across a population divided down to the centre between male and female. youngest at the bottom oldest at the top. called population pyramid because when the population is growing the graph is the shape of a triangle. can be used to compare the difference between male and female populations in an area. Can show number of dependents and general population at any given
There are 3 main trends in population pyramids
Expansive: High mortality rates among young members and high fertility rates. creates triangle shape. population does not increase much lots of young members.
Constructive: Lower mortality rate with the fertility rate remaining constant. Pyramids wider in the middle. lots of middle-aged and elderly people, but fewer young people
Stationary: Low mortality rate and low fertility rate. pilar shape. stable population not change significantly Baring any sudden changes to fertility rates of mortality rates
