Anatomy of the Long Bone
Epiphysis: End of bone and cancellous bone.
Epiphyseal Plate: Growth plate.
Diaphysis: Shaft and compact bone.
Epiphyseal Line: Bone stops growing in length.
Metaphysis: Between epiphysis and diaphysis. Contains the growth plate.
Compact bone: Dense outer layer on every bone that appears smooth and solid.
Spongy bone: Made up of a honeycomb of small, needle-like or flat pieces of bone called trabeculae.
Types of Bones
Long Bone: Long and thin shaped bone.
Examples: Tibia, fibula, femur, metatarsals, and phalanges.
Short Bone: A squat and cubed shaped bone.
Examples: Tarsals, carpals, and patella.
Irregular Bone: A shape that is different from all three other classifications.
Examples: Vertebræ, sacrum, coccyx, temporal, and sphenoid.
Flat Bone: Flattened and broad surface bone.
Examples: Sternum, occipital, nasal, frontal, and vomer.
Axial Bones: Long axis of the body.
Examples: Skull, vertebral column, and rib cge.
Appendicular Bones: Bones of upper and lower limbs.
Examples: Girdles attaching limbs to axial skeleton.
