RP5 - ACHIEVEMENT OF STUDENTS WITHOUT SEN IN INCLUSIVE EDUCATION
REACTIONS TO MESSAGES / IDEAS
Good to finally read some actual data from studies on the topic. Although I would point out that the title here "Analysis..." should be caveated by the conslusions "should not be overstated"
I still remain sceptical particularly around the lack of longitudinal studies but it is more positive than negative
shortage and limited quality of empirical studies on achievement of students without SEN
At worst, the majority of studies demonstrated that attending incl. educ. is unrelated to the academic achievement of students without SEN
UNIQUE CONNECTIONS
TO OTHER IDEAS
Reinforces the idea that training is important
Can I link this to policy on training
rarely works if looked at in isolation
i.e. if we are just throwing money at it.
needs to be part of a wider organisational change
which changes teaching strategies
IMPACT ON YOUR THINKING
Puts me at ease as to some of the doubts I had about how my class was going if I was giving attention to specific students. Spending time with Miriam...what's going on the other side of the room
IMPLICATIONS FOR PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE
Going forward, push for appropriate training
strategies for inclusive that also work effectively for students without SEN:
control of task difficulty, focus on concepts, sensitive teachers
lack of support from special co-teacher - stress and burnout
effects greater in primary than secondary - > how can I change that - not just a teacher of content and become better at instructional skills
Social justice aspect -> should be done if no negative impact on students without SEN (i.e. not impacting on their rights)
