ANALYSIS
Purpose: "The process of defining what is to be learned" (McGriff, 2000).
Learning Objective #3: At the end of the presentation, course participants will be able to form a shopping list containing foods and supplements which should be and should NOT be consumed to maintain a healthy pregnancy, with instructor’s agreement & evaluation
Learning Objective #2: At the end of the presentation, using their notes, course participants will work together in groups to list negative effects of poor nutrition on unborn babies during pregnancy, according to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.
Learning Objective #1: At the end of the presentation, course participants will successfully recall what supplements/vitamins should be taken and avoided during pregnancy within two minutes.
My Learning Unit presentation, titled Nutrition & Pregnancy will teach participants what foods and supplements should be consumed and avoided during pregnancy, benefits of good nutrition during pregnancy, how poor nutrition can affect an unborn baby, and more. The following three (out of six total) Learning Objectives will serve as a guide for this presentation.
-
DEVELOPMENT
Purpose: "The process of authoring and producing the materials" (McGriff, 2000).
Instruction Materials:
PowerPoint-based presentation containing factual evidence, short Youtube videos and explanations for examples, and slides with checkpoint questions for participants to answer during presentation.
Group work, post-presentation, that will allow participants to work together to list negative effects of poor nutrition on unborn babies during pregnancy, as well as other areas which participants choose to discuss with each other.
Real-world cases of pregnant women (how far along in their pregnancy they are, how much they weigh, their ages, etc.) and what their recommended daily caloric intake should be. These cases will be in the PowerPoint presentation and will allow participants to actively learn and engage.
IMPLEMENTATION
Purpose: "The process of installing the project in a real-world context" (McGriff, 2000).
Mode of Delivery: In-person, "classroom"-based setting.
-
EVALUATION
Purpose: "The process of determining the adequacy of the instruction" (McGriff, 2000).
Formative Evaluation: To measure effectiveness of instruction during the course, I as the instructor will take a brief survey at the beginning of the presentation on which participants know what regarding the presentation topic. I will then track learning progress based on how engaged each student is and how often/accurately they answer questions.
Summative Evaluation: To measure effectiveness of instruction at the end of the course, I will supply a questionnaire & feedback sheet to each course participant, as well as a miniature quiz which I will use to gauge my performance as an educator.
-
DESIGN
Purpose: "The process of specifying how it is to be learned" (McGriff, 2000).
Target Audience: Pregnant women who are seeking information & guidance through a local public facility (Harbor Community Birth - Hoquiam, Washington).
Instruction Plan: This Learning Unit presentation will be taught to participants using a combination of a PowerPoint presentation with 1-2 short, embedded YouTube videos, asking participants questions after about 10 minutes of teaching ("checkpoint questions"), and group work.
