ON STYLE
"almost all manga was gekiga like Golgo 13. So it was all gekiga or sports manga, nothing to do with science fiction." Remembering how much he loved science fiction as a child, Otomo wanted to recreate that kind of excitement; "That was in part how something like Domu came about. [...] There was no hard science fiction manga [...] so I wanted to change that and do something more realistic and believable."[8]

ON CLEANLINESS IN STYLE
“In terms of my style of characterization, when I was younger I tried to draw very traditional manga-like art. Things like Tetsuwan Atom, I tried to imitate that. However, when I was in high school the illustration work from people like Yokoo Tadanori and Isaka Yoshitaro became quite popular and I ended up really liking their art styles. The result was that I wanted to try to do my manga with something like those type of art styles instead. So from then on I wanted to do characters in manga with this new kind of approach, rather than the classic style. I wanted manga to have more of a feel of illustration to it I suppose.” - Forbes
It was here I wanted to talk more about Otomo’s approach to illustration, specifically in regards to character and mecha design. In both cases, Otomo has an incredibly clean and unique style, so I was curious as to where that had originated from.

Some Pictures (Notion)
All these notes/ questions presume that I see things from an artistic western-centric lens with all the movements, frustration and "legitimate" backstories to support the making of something. Just take Fujimoto Tatsuki for example, he likes creating powerful women in his stories because he just likes powerful dominating women (maybe deep rooted trauma lol)
