Christianity Beliefs Condensed for Y11 exam
Nature of God
Omnibenevolent
God is all-loving and compassionate
Expresses love in all he does- Jesus taught about Agape love which is the message of God "love thy neighbour"
God pardons/forgives us of our sins that we commit- Jesus taught about forgiveness no matter how many times "Let he who has not sinned..."
How can God be all-loving in a world of Suffering?- Free Will!- God allows us to learn and make mistakes so that we can grow and develop therefore suffering is of our making not his.
Omnipotent
God is all-powerful
God created the heavens and Earth via the creation story
God created life as a gift for us- stewardship
"Nothing is impossible with God"
Just
God is fair and does not commit prejudice.
God will judge us all equally on the day of judgement
We should act in a fair way towards others for we should work in God's image.
Resurrection (of Jesus)
The idea that three days after Jesus died on the cross to achieve atonement between God and humans he rose from the dead to continue sharing God's word and prove that he was/is God in human flesh
Jesus defeated and defied death for he was stronger and with God- suggesting how with God Christians should not be afraid of death and instead embrace a life of good faith
Christians will give thanks as Jesus was reborn into the world and proven to be the son of God.
"He has risen just as it said"
- suggests how Jesus' resurrection was foreseen and thus he is the prophesied messiah
Some Christians will believe that other key events in Jesus' life were more important (showed better that he was the son of God) e.g Incarnation- God in the trinity. / ascension "While he was blessing them, he left them and was taken up to heaven"
Celebrated via Easter (Christian practices)
Afterlife
Heaven
A place of paradise whereby Christians gain eternal life with God- no worries or fears can reach heaven
It is the reward for a Christian's good faith and salvation (via Grace,Law and the Holy Spirit)
Jesus is in heaven thus a place with God-
"While he was blessing them, he left them and was taken up to heaven"
Hell
A place of sin whereby God is not present
The punishment for humans who lead a life of sin- e.g those who are not faithful or commit crime(s)
The place is where Satan exists (the snake in the garden of Eden)- great fire and torment
Day of Judgement
After death a person's soul is resurrected (as Jesus was) and sent towards God- decreed in the apostles creed
"he will come to judge the living and the dead"
- Jesus will judge us all.
A person's soul and life is then judged by God- this is done justly (as in God's nature) for God looks at all the good and evil acts and thoughts and individuals complete throughout their lives.
This decision with then dictate whether a soul/person is sent to heaven or to hell
Purgatory- Roman Catholicism
The place at which a soul is placed before it enters heaven/hell e.g during judgement.
The soul is cleansed of all sin before entering heaven
Creation of the World
Liberalist
DO somewhat accept scientific views
Believe that God is still at the origin of the world yet believe that the story is a metaphor of how God created the world and is not a direct account
Might believe that God created the big bang and that Religion tells us "why" it occurred.
Fundamentalists
DO NOT accept scientific views
Believe that the world was literally created in 6 days by God and before the creation of the world on God existed
"In the beginning God created the heavens and the Earth"
- God was the origin of all creation and created the World via his omnipotence.
Salvation
Grace
A gift from God for good faith and service to God-
"For it is by grace that you have been saved, through faith...it is a gift from God"
Enables all Christians to get to heaven as it makes up and supports a Christian when they sin/perform bad deeds
Grace is only able to be given as a gift due to Jesus' sacrifice and the reformation of the relationship between God and humans (atonement)
Law (good deeds)
The constant acts of good Christian deeds in someone's life e.g via following and acting out the teachings of the bible or preaching about the scripture
Requires faith as the key belief- the supreme action which a christian should perform
Not sufficient for a Christian to obtain salvation as a Christian will always sin (Original sin) and thus lose any progress they make in goods deeds to obtain salvation.
The gift of Grace helps Christians achieve salvation.
The Holy Spirit
The distributor/giver of Grace on Earth- carries Grace to give to Christians as salvation
