Feudal power structure
Lords/Nobles: A freeman born to nobility and answerable to the king.
Popes: The Pope is the head of the Catholic Church.
Peasants: A person who looks after the land of the Lord/Nobleman in exchange for their livelihood.
Kings: Highest ranking person in the nation.
Knights: Usually sons of nobles, that are trained from an early age, to defend the King and country.
Exchange of land: A Peasant receives a plot of land from a Noble or King in exchange of varies jobs and services.
Protection/Loyalty: The lower classes agree to serve the upper-class in return for protection.
Fall of Rome
Impacts: Economic failure. Break down of commerce and trade. Lands became overpopulated with barbarians (non romans) which meant the hired barbarians had no loyalty to Rome and led to rampant corruption.
Barbarian invasions: Began in the late 4th century. Many Germanic groups rebelled against the Roman Empire. Immigrating to Rome and taking over the lands and military forces.
"Dark ages": Lasted 900 years. Falls between the fall of Roman Empire and the Renaissance.
Black Death
What it was: It was a plague that killed 3/4 of the population. It was originally spread by the rats onboard cargo ships.
Impacts on Europe: Killed much of the population, Led to the end of feudalism, Made people question their faith. Made it easier for pheasants to make their own choices.
How it spread: It spread by contact, poor hygiene and limited medical knowledge.
Life on the Manor
Roles: Lord of the Manor. Vassal, Bailiff, Reeve, Serf, peasants / villein, cottager, servants.
Main Buildings: The Manor House, Workshop, Watermill, Church, Serf houses, Barn, Blacksmith, Priest house, Bake oven.
Life styles: Lords/Nobles- Privileged, High ranking official, Material comforts.
Peasants - Works/staff, or labours that tend the land. Answerable to the owner of the manor. lived in more disadvantaged circumstances
Crusades
What it was: A religious war between the Christians and the Muslims
Impacts on Europe: Expansion of kingdoms, as well as the creation of new political units.
