Application
Problem with application
Does the specific teaching in Scripture directly apply to me or does the general principle behind the teaching apply to me?
Generally, the teachings of the epistles more directly apply to us while the teachings of narratives and Old Testament laws more indirectly apply to us via a general principle.
- Specific direct application—Ephesians 5:22ff—Wives are to submit to their husbands.
- General indirect application (Zuck, p. 28)—Numbers 15:32-36
a. For Israel, "If an Israelite does not follow God's commandments explicitly, God will punish him."
b. For us, "God punishes disobedience."
Two steps helping one to determine the choice (Finzel, pp. 103, 104)
! "Every teaching of Scripture is to be received universally, unless the Bible itself limits the audience, either in the context of the passage itself or other biblical teaching." (McQuillin)

B. Guidelines for making a legitimate application– climbing the abstraction ladder (adapted from Introduction to Biblical Interpretation, 407):
Before discussing the abstraction ladder, let’s consider the possibility that the passage may better be understood as an arrow or a foundation stone.
- Determine the original applications intended by the passage.
- Evaluatethelevelofspecificityofthoseapplications. Aretheytransferable across time and space to other audiences?
Does the text present a broad theological or moral principle or does it give a specific manifestation of such a principle, which Scripture elsewhere embodies in one or more different forms?
Does the context of the book in which the passage appears or of additional revelation limit the application in any way or does it promote a more universal application?
Is the particular cultural form expressed in the biblical text present today, and if so does it have the same significance as it did then?
Is the rationale for the application rooted in a creation ordinance, in the character of God, or in part of His redemptive plan for humanity?
-
- If they are not directly applicable, identify one or more broader cross- cultural principles that the specific elements of the text reflect.
