Trade and Globalization
Balance of trade- the difference in value between a country's imports and exports, I put this under globalization and trade because it directly connects to trade
Exports- The transportation of goods and services out of a country. This can go under the balance of trade category because balance of trade is controlled by imports and exports.
Fair trade- An arrangement designed to help producers in growing countries to ahive sustainable and equitable trade relationships. I would say this connects to exports, because the products being exported are sometimes fair trade, and fair trade is connected to what is being exported out of the country.
Container ship- A ship that is designed to carry goods stowed in containers. This directly connects to exports, because most exported goods are exported using container ships.
Choke point- A point of congestion or blockage. An exaple being the Panama canal. I put choke point under container ship because container ships are usually the cause.
Creative destruction- The decay of long standing practices, procedures, products, or serivces followed by more innovative, disruptive ones.
Favela- A community without infastructure. this goes under the creative destruction catagory, as they are directly linked.
imports- The transportation of goods and services In to a country. This can go under the balance of trade category because balance of trade is controlled by imports and exports.
Scarcity- When there is a limited supply or shortage of a material. Countries that have a limited supply of a material my need to import more of a that material or export to other countries.
Vancouver Canada- A Canadian seaport on the pacific coast. This was put under Imports and exports because sea ports have historically been Economic hubs for imports and exports.
Specialization- The process of becoming an expert in a certain subject/skill. I put this under export because when a country or state Specializes in something they base most of there economy on that skill and need to export it to the rest of the world.
Commodity- A basic good used in commerce that is interchangeable with other goods of the same type. This goes under the trade catagory because it connects to distribution of goods
Ivory Coast and Chocolate- The Ivory Coast is one of the worlds biggest cocoa producers, producing 30% of the worlds cocoa. This was put under balance of trade because they are exporting it but only receiving 5% of each chocolate bar.
capital/investment- Spending by a company or government on buildings/infastructure. I put this under trade and globalization because globalization is all about connections worldwide, and capital investement is directly linked to this process.
Global supply Chain- involves all the steps involved in manufacturing and delivering a product or service when the steps takes place in more than one country
-
Winner of Globalization- Some one who benefits from globalization. For example of Winner of globalization is Exporters with a competitive advantage.
Losers of Globalization- Some one who doesn't benefits from globalization. For example of loser of globalization is people who lose their job to an noncompetitive advantages.
Migration
Emigrant- A person that leaves their country in order to permanently settle/live in another area. This was put in the category of migration because is based on the movement of people
Refugee- A person that has fled a country to escape war, persecution, or natural disaster. Refugee was put under emigrant and immigrant because when refugee's are displaced they have to leave their country and settle in a foreign country.
Ukraine- A European country next to Russia, Romania, and Poland. There has been over 500,000 refuges from Ukraine due to Russia's invasion on Ukraine
IDP/ Internally Displaced Person- A person that is forced to leave their home but is still within country's borders. These people are not legally considered a refugee but are forced to leave for the similar reasons.
Asylum- The protection guaranteed by a nation to someone who has left their country and cannot return safely due to political reasons. These people are considered refugees.
Gentrification- The processes of interaction and integration among people, companies, and government. When people are finding a place to move that are looking for opportunity and ways to better their lives.
Brain Drain- The Emigration and Immigration of educated and professional people from one country for another because of better pay and or living conditions.
Immigrant- A person that comes to live in a foreign country. This was put in the category of migration because it is based on the movement of people
-
Documented Immigrants- A person that has the proper identification and papers to legally be a citizen in a foreign country. Immigrants and Documented Immigrants are both classified as immigrants, however they are not in the same category because documented immigrants are legal.
Undocumented Immigrants- A person that dose not have the proper identification and papers to legally be a citizen in a foreign country. These people are Immigrants but are Illegal
Rural to Urban Migration-Pull factors - Opportunity and situation that influence people to move from rural areas to urban areas. For example better job opportunities and Improvement of living in urban areas
Rural to Urban Migration-push factors - that influence people to move from rural areas to urban areas. For example Fewer jobs, lower wages, and war.
Urbanization
Sustianable cities, a city designed with consideration for social, economic, environmental impact, and resilient habitat for existing populations, without compromising the ability of future generations to experience the same. Sustainble cities are becoming a lot more common especially as climate change gets worse.
Vancouver, Canada. Vancouver Canada is one of the biggest cities in Canada and is taking a lot of steps to become a more environmentally friendly place. I put it under sustainable cities because it is currently one of the most sustainable cities on earth.
Carrying capacity- The number of people an environment can support. So basically, how many people a city can hold, there is only so much space.
Megacity- A city with over 10 million people. I put megacity under carrying capacity because the carrying capacity determines how many people the city can hold, and with megacities it's important that there is enough space and resources for the whole population.
A primate city is a city that is the largest in it's country or providence. Typically larger than all of the ones before as well. I put primate city under mega-city because typically primate cities are mega cities, as they are the largest in that nation.
Population density- Population per square mile of land area. I think population density connects with carrying capacity because the population determines how many people need to be supported.
Urban- An urban area, or built-up area, is a human settlement with a high population density and infrastructure of built environment. Urban areas are created through urbanization.
Urban planning- The process of designing and developing urban areas. Urban planning directly relates to Urban areas, as urban planning determines the layout.
Rural- A rural area or a countryside is a geographic area that is located outside towns and cities. Rural and urban areas are pretty simular in the way that they are outside of the city. But Urban areas tend to have a high population density, where as rural areas are more spread out and have a low population density.
Scarcity- A lack of resources or supplies. I put this under rural because rural areas tend to have more of a scarcity of supplies, especially because they have such a low population density.
Gentrification- The process whereby the character of a poor urban area is changed by wealthier people moving in, improving housing, and attracting new businesses, typically displacing current inhabitants in the process. I put this under the category of Urban, because the whole concept is an Urban area being changed, so I think they directly relate to each other.
Infastructure- The basic physical and organizational structures and facilities (e.g. buildings, roads, power supplies) needed for the operation of a society or enterprise. I put this under urban planning because both of these terms are based on structure and planning, in order to make a city.
Absolute advantage- The ability of an individual or group to carry out a partical economic activity more efficiantly than others. Typically occuring in higher income counties.
Redlining- refuse (a loan or insurance) to someone because they live in an area deemed to be a poor financial risk. I think that this relates to absolute advantage, because usually the upper class has the advantage in these situations.
